Dorothy "Dot" Emma Marlowe Norton, age 100, of Glenwood, North Carolina, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, May 09, 2022 at Amorem Hospice in Hudson.

She was raised in the Glenwood community and attended Glenwood High School where she liked to play basketball. When she was in school, the 8th grade was counted high school, so she played all four years on the first team. She also played professionally for two years in Asheville. After school, she went to Asheville to work with Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. which was the only phone company there was. They rang every number for the people of Asheville.

Later, she married Ellis Norton. Following service in World War II, he was called back in service during the Korean conflict and they moved to Roswell, New Mexico for one year. After that they made their home in Asheville and had two children. She stayed home while Ellis worked. After the kids were almost grown, she went to work at Sears.

When she and Ellis retired, they came back to Glenwood and started doing a lot of volunteer work, especially around the senior center where they started carrying home delivered meals for 18 years. In 2003, they won the Governor's Award for Volunteerism. They enjoyed doing this very much. She was secretary of her Sunday School class for 15 years and worked in the Christian Clothes Store. She also attended the Homemakers Clubs for years where she gave back to the community.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Lee and Dorothy Haynes Marlowe; husband, Ellis Norton; and all of her siblings, Lela McCall, Dessie Mae Lawing, Rebecca Bristol, and J.O., Lawrence, Tom, Monroe, Grayson, and Grover Lee Marlowe.

She is survived by her two children, Garland Norton (Libbie) of Old Fort and Mary Kirstein (Dean) of Chattanooga, TN; two grandchildren, Matthew Kirstein (Christina) and Victoria Kirstein; two great grandchildren, Hannah and Emily Kirstein; a number of nieces and nephews; and her special friend and caregiver, Linda Good.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Glenwood Baptist Church with Revs. Dennis Love and Steve Durham officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
