(Notes from an interview with Evelyn ((Meyer)) Hanna 1987

She came to the United States with her family in 1865. She married Herman George Meyer on 4 January 1877 in Minonk, Woodford County, Illinois.

The following is a transcript of her obituary in the Sterling [IL] Evening Gazette, Friday, 22 November 1912, front page.

DEATH OF MRS. HERMAN MEYER THIS MORNING

The death of Mrs. Herman Meyer occurred this morning at 3:45 o'clock at the Sterling hospital. Her death was due to bronchitis which developed after an operation she submitted to over a week ago. Mrs. Meyer lived in Hume, six miles west of Rock Falls. She was taken suddenly with an attack of appendicitis Tuesday, November 11. She was brought to the hospital at once and near the midnight hour an operation was performed and the appendix removed. She seemed to rally for a day or two and then grew worse. Bronchitis developed and she has grown steadily worse for the past few days until the end came.

Henrietta Janssen was born in Jever, Oldenberg, Germany, and was fifty-nine years of age May 15. With her parents she came to America in 1865 and settled near Minonk, Woodford County. The family stayed there until the death of the father [Heinrich Folkers Janssen, 1884], the mother then moving to this section and living with her children who had moved here previously.

Thirty-six years ago she was married to Herman Meyer at Minonk. They came to this county in 1896 and have been living most of the time on a large farm they bought west of Rock Falls. Mr. Meyer died March 2, 1910 [sic - 1911], and is buried in Riverside [Cemetery].

Mrs. Meyer has been conducting the farm since her husband's death with the aid of her children. She leaves to mourn the following children: Mrs. August Gerdes of Hume, Henry of Washington State, Mrs. Henry Otten of Hopkins, Edward in Hume, and Louise, Fred, Lena, and John all at home.

Mrs. Meyer was a good woman. She was a fond mother, and the children will miss the best friend they ever had. There can be but one mother and when she is gone, there is a void that cannot be filled.

There are the following brothers and sisters: I. L. and H. T. Janssen of Sterling, Mrs. U. P. Goeken of Sterling, and Mrs. Theodore Koster of Idaho.

No definite arrangements can be made for the funeral as no responses have yet been received from the children and others who are away in the west. It is thought that the funeral will be held either Monday or Tuesday. The date will be published tomorrow. The services will probably be held at the home and the interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
