ROBERT LEE — J.D. Harmon, born June 21, 1917, in Coke County, Texas, to Thomas R. and Amanda Sparks Harmon, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jo Caston Harmon.
J. D. and Mary Jo were married Feb. 14, 1942, in Ballinger, Texas.
He is survived by his daughter, Mandy Harmon Box and husband Frank Box; grandchildren Damon Box and wife Lisa, Erin Box, and Brandon Box and fiancée Candice Bramblett; brothers Alf, Milton "Bill," and Randle Harmon; sister Inez Harper; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
J.D. was a lifelong member of Pecan Baptist Church and served as a deacon until his health no longer permitted it.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in North Africa, Sicily, Belgium, France, and Germany with the 48th Surgical Hospital/128th Evacuation Hospital. He received the EAME Campaign Medal with eight Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead, Army of Occupation World War II and Efficiency-Honor-Fidelity medals.
Upon returning to Robert Lee in 1945, J.D. went to work operating a bulldozer. He enjoyed doing work that helped farmers and ranchers improve their land and soon began his own business with the help of his wife, Mary Jo. He operated as a land improvement contractor in Coke County and the surrounding area for 41 years. During that time he was a member of the Coke County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Texas Land Improvement Contractors Association and Land Improvement Contractors of America, where he served as president from 1970-72. He was named Contractor of the Year in 1976.
J.D. followed a family tradition of community service by serving on the West Coke County Hospital board and the Coke County Draft Board. He was also a member of the Disabled Veterans of America.
He shared an active role with his wife in raising their only child, Mandy. He never missed anything she was a part of and was always ready for family trips or just spending time together. He often took Mandy with him on jobs, where she would ride in the truck or on a bulldozer. He enjoyed spending time with his son-in-law, Frank, and with his three grandchildren. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at First Baptist Church of Robert Lee with burial in Paint Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home.
