Groff, Ruth Rodes Martin, 80, of Mount Solon, died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at a home in Wrightsville, Ga. She had lived in Rockingham County and Lancaster Co., Pa. most of her life and had been living with her daughter in Georgia for the past five weeks.
Mrs. Groff was born Nov. 5, 1925, in Mount Crawford, and was a daughter of the late David M. and Naomi Koogler Rodes.
She was a homemaker. She wrote poetry, which was published in periodicals and also wrote a book. She was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church, Briery Branch community.
On Dec. 7, 1948, she married John D. Martin, who preceded her in death Oct. 5, 1964. On Nov. 26, 1975, she married Walter B. Groff, who died July 19, 1987.
She is survived by three daughters, Esther Landis of Mount Solon, Edith Witmer of Tennille, Ga., and Christina Kolb of Sellersville, Pa; six sisters, Catherine Rodes, Martha Burkholder, and Ruby Rodes, all of Mount Crawford, Esther Good of Dayton, Iva Beachy of Harrisonburg, and Rhoda Bennett of Hinton; six brothers, John Rodes, Aaron Rodes and Daniel Rodes, all of Mount Crawford, Noah Rodes of
Port Republic, Joseph Rodes of Goshen, Ind., and Adin Rodes of Bridgewater; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pike Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg with pastors of Bethany Mennonite Church officiating. Burial will follow at Pike Mennonite Church Cemetery with Lester Boll officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. today at Pike Mennonite Church.
