Dr. George Truett Hollis, known from birth as Truett, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Pasadena, CA, Thursday, January 28, 2016. He was born May 22, 1928 in Union, SC, the sixth of eight children born to the late Mary Elizabeth Alverson Hollis and Orin Bomar Hollis, Sr.

From early in life, Truett demonstrated a passion for music which grew into his becoming an accomplished pianist and musicologist.

Truett served in the Army during the Korean Conflict after graduating from Wofford College in 1949. He then went on to earn his B.M. in Piano Performance from Yale University and his B.A. and Ph.D. in Music History from the University of Southern California.

Truett taught piano performance as well as Music History and other courses for the Music Department at Converse College prior to moving to South Pasadena, CA in 1957. It was there where he taught middle school music while pursuing his doctorate at USC.

At East Los Angeles College, he was Professor and Chair of the Music Department. He retired from the Los Angeles City College as Professor Emeritus.

He donated his extensive music library to LACC in recent years, for which they named the Dr. George Truett Hollis Music Library in his honor.

Known as the family historian, Truett did extensive research into the Hollis family genealogy dating back to the early 1700’s when Thomas Hollis came to Boston from England and helped to establish Harvard University.

Truett was predeceased by his beloved wife “Elly” who passed away at their home on November 18, 1993. He was also predeceased by his three older sisters, Mary, Alice, and Betty, and by his older brother, Bomar. He is survived by three brothers, Tom, Myers, and Richard and their spouses, all of whom live in Spartanburg, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Truett’s burial will be held in his home town of Union, SC next to his parents. A private service will be held at a later date.
