Roswell Tupper was born in New Hampshire about 1816. He was the son of Nathaniel Tupper (1785) and Olive (1798). Roswell was a resident at Campton, Grafton County, New Hampshire, when he married Ann Felt Church, whose residence was Millington, at East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, March 25, 1838.

Roswell Tupper, age 34 years and a sawyer, was enumerated August 27, 1850, at Campton, Grafton County, New Hampshire, with his father Nathaniel Tupper 65 and a farmer, his mother Olive Tupper 59, his wife Ann Tupper 30, his brother William Tupper 19 and a farmer, and his five children: [William] Henry Tupper 11, Charles Tupper 8, Florina Tupper 6, Joseph B. Tupper 3, and Angenora Tupper 1. William Henry and Charles were shown born in Connecticut and all other family members were show born in New Hampshire.

Roswell Tupper, a 44-year-old filer in a saw mill, was enumerated July 19, 1860, at Eureka, Humboldt, California, with Charles Tupper 19 and a laborer, and William Tupper,28 and a laborer. Ann Tupper, age 42 years, was enumerated June 1, 1860, at Campton, Grafton County, New Hampshire, with Angenora Tupper 11, and Roswell E. Tupper 8.

Roswell Tupper was enlisted by Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Girard Whipple and was mustered into Company D, First Battalion of Mountaineers, California Volunteers, at Fort Humboldt, Eureka, Humboldt County, California, by Captain Hugh Brady Fleming, 9th Regiment of Infantry, United States Army, September 14, 1863, He was immediately appointed Chief Musician of the battalion on the same day and his Daily Duty was teaching field music. At his enlistment Roswell stated that he was born in New Hampshire and he was 47 years old and by occupation was a Mechanic. His enlistment contract described him as being 5 feet 8 inches, with Dark complexion, Hazel eyes and Gray hair. He was promoted and transferred to the Non-commissioned Staff per Special Order No. 6 dated Headquarters, First Battalion of Mountaineers, California Volunteers, Fort Gaston, Humboldt County, March 17, 1864. From August 24, 1864, to March, 1865, he was on Detached Service at Fort Gaston. Chief Musician Tupper was mustered out at Fort Humboldt, June 14, 1865. Col. Whipple Post, No. 49, Grand Army of the Republic, obtained a headstone to place on his grave in the Myrtle Grove Cemetery in December 1893 (see: The Humboldt Times [Eureka, CA], Dec. 22, 1893; 4:3).

He was a 23-year-old resident at Holderness, Grafton County, New Hampshire, when he enlisted as a private on December 9, and he was mustered into Company A, 6th New Hampshire Infantry December 15, 1861. Private Tupper was wounded by a minié ball at the Second Battle of Bull Run, August 29, 1862, and was discharged for disability at Newark, New Jersey, December 31, 1862. He died at Plymouth, New Hampshire, March 6, 1931.
- Charles Llewellyn (1841, CT - Aug. 18, 1915, MA). He was 22 years old when he enlisted as a private with his father at Eureka, California, and mustered into Company D, First Battalion, California Mountaineers, on September 21, 1863. Private Tupper was mustered out at Fort Humboldt May 20, 1865. Charles died at Medford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, August 18, 1915.
