Doris Baxter, nee Leiser, daughter of William and Gwendola Leiser, was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 16, 1925.
She earned a Master of Science degree in Botany, "seed science" or "carpology," from the University of Michigan, and worked for Burpee Seeds in the midwest. She moved to the Sacramento area in about 1961, which is when she joined First United Methodist Church (FUMC). In Sacramento, she worked for the federal Department of Agriculture as a seed analyst.
She met Bill Baxter through activities with the Sierra Club, and she and Bill married at FUMC on August 13, 1971. She and Bill were active outdoors people. They worked a gold mine in the Sierras for many years. Doris had a productive and interesting career in her botanical and seed science pursuits. She was co-author of a book published in 2008 called "Seed Purity & Taxonomy," described online as "the most complete and up-to-date resource of information available on seed identification and seed taxonomy."
Doris was also active as a volunteer in charitable works. She volunteered at the Sacramento Food Bank for many years. She was a substitute organist at FUMC and other Sacramento-area churches when the regular organist was away, and also played the organ at Mercy McMahon Terrace, a retirement residence in Sacramento, right up until she moved into her own retirement community. She served on the Board of Trustees of FUMC and on other committees of the church, and was active in the Sacramento United Methodist Union and United Methodist Women.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, children of her deceased brother, James Leiser, of Portland, Oregon. Doris and Bill drove to Oregon for her brother's memorial just a few months before Doris died, and she did the driving.
Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 2100 J St, Sacramento, CA 95816, on Tuesday, December 15th at 11:00 am. Flowers or donations may be sent to the following: The First United Methodist Church, 2100 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95816.
