Civil War Veteran
Private, Co. K, 85th Pennsylvania Infantry

Enlisted and mustered in on 6 Nov 1861 at the age of 51. James was ill and treated at various hospitals in Philadelphia for eight of his first 18 months in service. Date and method of discharge not given.

His son Leonard enlisted with him in the 85th Pennsylvania, and three other sons enlisted in various regiments soon after. All four met early deaths:
Jonas, returned from the war with his health broken and died in 1872 of "disease contracted in the service."
Josiah, died in July 1865 "on his way home from the war."
Leonard, Died in Service of disease at Harrison's Landing VA, 22 Aug 1862.
David, survived the war but was killed in a train accident in 1876.

On Oct. 14, 1830, at Normalville, Fayette County, James married Catherine Harbaugh.

A friend once recalled that "while in the service [James'] family lived on very scant living."
