David's father and three of his brothers also served in the Civil War:
James Rowan (father), died in 1880 at the age of 70.
Jonas, returned from the war with his health broken and died in 1872 of "disease contracted in the service."
Josiah, died in July 1865 "on his way home from the war."
Leonard, Died in Service of disease at Harrison's Landing VA, 22 Aug 1862.

On June 3, 1866, David wed Sarah 'Catharine' Johnson (1846-1924). They had three children: Elmer W. Rowan (born 1868), Emma A. Byrer (born 1871) and Mary A. Rowan (born 1875).
On June 29, 1876, David was killed by a passing train at Ohiopyle, Fayette County.
