John Ainsworth was the son of Samuel Ainsworth and Margaret Young. His father settled in Hanover Twp. in about 1736 and John was born there shortly afterwards. His brother Lazarus died in Mar 1777, without issue, and John inherited his estate. John married Margaret Mayes (or Margaretha Mays), the daughter of James Mayes, on 3 Jan 1765 in Hanover, PA from Early Lutheran Baptisms and Marriages in Southeastern PA.

John Ainsworth, the son of Samuel, was born in 1740, in Hanover Twp., (then) Lancaster Co, PA and died 14 Aug 1812 in Hanover Twp.* and there buried. He married Margaret Mayes, the daughter of James Mayes, born 1744, died 13 Sep 1828. Article lists children: Samuel, Nancy, James, John, Elizabeth, Margaret, Sally, Jean and Matthew, born between 1765 and 1787. Pennsylvania Genealogies; Chiefly Scotch-Irish and German, by Wm Henry Egle, Harrisburg, PA, 1896, p 1 to 5 (see photo of page 1).

Plus on page 30: "Widow Ainsworth" was a church member 1813-1827; Samuel Ainsworth, 1795-1797; John Ainsworth, 1788-1812; Lazarus Ainsworth, 1796-1802 and James Ainsworth, 1797-1803. This includes a John and a Samuel, who appear to be two different men. Plus on page 35 on 6 Apr 1797, a James and a John Ainsworth were assessed money for the building of the graveyard wall, commensurate with their county taxes.

*Per "....died 14 Aug 1812 in Hanover Twp." In 1785, Hanover Twp. formerly in Lancaster Co., became Dauphin Co., where the cemetery now lies. Based on this, he died in Dauphin Co., PA.

John's will was written on 11 Aug 1812 and probated on 8 Dec 1812. His sons in law, William Allen and Thomas Brown were named executors. Dauphin Co., PA Register of Wills, Book Film JBH-307, Vols 1D, 1812 - 1826, LDS Film #005534187, John Ainsworth on page 6 is the first person listed in the alphabetical index. I believe his will says: In the name of God Amen. I John AInsworth of West Hanover township in the county of Dauphin and state of Pennsylvania(.) Farmer being ___?___ and _?__ and weak in body but of sound mind memory and understanding (blefsed be God for ____?___) but considering the uncertainty of this transitory life do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit Principally and first of all I commend my ___?___ soul into the hands of God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian lick manner and to such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to blefs me in this life [after my funeral expences and all my just debts are first paid] I give and dispose of the same in the following manner to wit it is my will and I allow that my dearly beloved wife MARGARET live on the place whereon I now live and to receive all ifsue and profit thereof during her natural life together with all my farming utensials and stock of every kind that is thereof and my housefold and kitchen furniture to be hers and at her disposal and it is my wish and I allow my youngest daughter JEAN to get one hundred and twenty five pounds out of my personal estate at any time that her mother and my executor should think best and in case it should be that it did not suit my wife to live on my place then in that case or at her death I allow my executor herein after named to sell my plantation either at publick or private sale for the best price that can be got for it and to execute a sufficient deed or deeds or conveyance to the purchaser or purchasers in fee simple and the money arrising from the sale if my wife be liveing to be put to intrest and the intrest to be for her support and at her death to be equally divided amongth all my children share and share alick and further I give to my grandson JOHN AINSWORTH a twenty five pound bond due in the 1819 and payable by George Seyfert And lastly I nominate constitute and appoint WILLIAM ALLEN and THOMAS BROWN to be the executors of this my last will hereby revoking all other wills legacys and bequests by me heretofore made and declaring this and no other to be my last will and testament(.)

The "Pennsylvania, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Deaths and Burials, 1856-1971", on Familysearch says he died 14 Aug 1812 in Lancaster Co., PA.

"Samuel Ainsworth, the eldest son of John Ainsworth and Margaret Mayes, was born in Hanover township, Dauphin county, Pa., on the 11th of Nov. 1765. He was brought up on his father's farm in Hanover, receiving a year's education in Philadelphia, in addition to that acquired in the schools of the neighborhood. After the organization of the county he became quite prominent, and twice elected to the Legislature. He died while in attendance on this body, at Philadelphia, in Feb. 1798, aged thirty-three years. Mr. Ainsworth married May 10, 1792, Margaret McEwen, of Hanover, born in 1770. She died near Lancaster, Ohio, Oct. 29, 1867. They had three children who married and removed to Ohio." Per Notes and Queries Historical and Genealogical Chiefly Relating to Interior Pennsylvania, 1st and 2nd Series, Vol. 1, edited by William Henry Egle, Baltimore, 1970 reprint from 1894, page 317.

His son Samuel Ainsworth, married Margaret M'Ewen on 10 May 1792, at Old Hanover Church.
