KAYSVILLE - Shirley Carroll Smith, 92, passed away Friday February 12, 2016 in Kaysville, Utah.

She was born July 10, 1923 to Frederick Moulton and Mabel Amelia Porter Carroll in Ogden, Utah where she spent her youth, graduating from Ogden High School in 1941.

Shirley married William Arthur Smith, a friend she had known since junior high, on March 12, 1943 and they honeymooned in California. Bill was soon inducted into the US Army and they spent nearly two years apart while he served in both the European and Pacific theatres during World War II. On his return they moved into a house on 12th Street in Ogden. They moved several years later to a new house in Kaysville to spend the next 50+ years.

Mom worked at the Defense Depot Ogden then Hill Air Force Base from where she retired after 25 years of service as a procurement manager for the F101 and F104 fighters.

In addition, she was a full time Mom, cheerleader and supporter of her children’s activities and interests. She was a tidy and efficient homemaker, superb cook and patient seamstress. Her house was clean enough to be healthy but cluttered enough to be happy. Most mornings were started with a cup of coffee on her deck, watching the sun come up.

We camped and hiked and fished at nearly every opportunity, with Shirley taking a bazillion pictures. Every summer meant a long, exciting vacation somewhere cool, with aunts, uncles and cousins mostly but sometimes with just our little family. And Shirley took more pictures, which are absolutely priceless.

Bill and Shirley retired at the ripe old age of 51 and immediately set out to explore the world. Pretty much got the Western United States covered, along with Hawaii, Alaska and Canada before age slowed them down in their early eighties. They made full use of the waters of Lake Powell and Flaming Gorge with a large group of boating friends and the lush beauty of Northern Utah’s Uinta Mountains in their trailer with more friends and family. She lacked the patience to fish with bait but could cast a fly with pinpoint accuracy.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, her parents, and one newborn brother Horace. She is survived by her children, Carol (Bill) Sharp, Teri (Wayne) McCallum, Craig (Janet) Smith, 8 grandchildren, 20 great grand children and 1 great-great grandson on the way; sister Gerry (Chuck - deceased) Grill, brother Kert (LuDean - deceased) Carroll, and sister Iris (Verlo - deceased) Petersen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at Lindquist Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main in Kaysville, Utah. Friends and family are invited to visit Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
