Sarah Goodrich was born on May 10, 1630 in Cambridgeshire, England. She married Thomas Wickham (1624-1688) in Connecticut c.1648 and they had seven children. Sarah ran a "dame school" (school for girls). Court records show that when a little girl was criticized for using "prophane" language ("by my soul" and "as I am a Christian") the girl testified that she learned that language at Mrs. Wickham's school (Town Records of New Haven, 1649-1662, p. 88). Sarah died at the age of 68 on Jan. 7, 1699 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. She left a will (inv. £31-11-10) stating that she was in a weak and helpless condition and at the great charge and care of her eldest son Thomas (1651-1730) to whom she left her estate except for some small legacies to her other children. Sarah was buried in Weathersfield Village Cemetery, but time and weather have erased the location of her grave.
