Joseph "Clyde" Cecil, age 96 of Lebanon, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.

Clyde was born December 13, 1919 in Raywick to the late Edward Dant Cecil and Mary Regina Hughes Cecil. He was a U.S. Army veteran having proudly served his country in World War II as a member of the 5th Army, 201st Ordnance. His unit arrived in Casablanca, Morocco on November 18, 1942. He was attached to General George S. Patton's 7th Army in Sicily where they partook in campaigns in Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. His unit was pinned down by the German military in Anzio, Italy which was later signified as The Battle of Anzio. He was in Kaiserslautern, Germany when the war ended and returned to the states September 1945. He is the recipient of the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and 6 Bronze Battle Stars.

Clyde retired from General Electric after 27 years and continued to farm in Marion County until his later years. He was an active member of the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard and a long-time parishioner of St. Charles Catholic Church.

Clyde is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Magdalen Thompson Cecil; one grandson, Travis Michael Douglas; and four brothers, Gus, Oldron, George and infant William Clyde Cecil.

Loving survivors include eight daughters, Rosemary Tills of Austin, TX, Teresa Shanks and Patti Burch (Stan) all of Louisville, Florence "Tootsie" Coulter (Darrel) of Fisherville, Karen Cecil of Lebanon, Julianna and Janet Cecil both of Lexington and Lynn Fryzel (Jeff) of Union; three sons, Michael Cecil of Lebanon, Joe Eddie Cecil (Marceline) and John Paul Cecil (Chickie) all of Saint Francis; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Kathleen Blandford, Dorothy Mills (Junior) and Gladys Brown (Joe) all of Louisville; four brothers, Ambrose, Mike (Patsy), Harold and Bert (Mary) all of Louisville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Monday, May 23, 2016 at Saint Charles Catholic Church, 675 Highway 327, Lebanon. The Rev. James W. Graf will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation is 3-8 PM Sunday at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto with a prayer service at 7 PM by The Rev. Deacon Joseph R. Dant.

Memorials may go toward the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard, c/o Mike Andrews, 185 Shreve Lane, Lebanon, KY 40033.

Pallbearers are grandsons, Michael Tills, Joey Cecil, Bobby Shanks, Adam Shanks, Brian Coulter, Ben Cecil, John Cecil and Jordan Stallard.
