SYLVESTER ONESI
77, RETIRED FIRE CAPTAIN
Sylvester Onesi, 77, a retired Niagara Falls Fire Department captain, died Friday (March 22, 2002) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness.
Onesi was born in Heilwood, Pa., but came to Niagara Falls as an infant with his family. He attended the former Trott Vocational High School.
During World War II, Onesi served in the U.S. Army and saw action in North Africa, Italy and the Rhineland.
He met his future wife on his first day back in Niagara Falls after the war. He married Estella M. Gaertner on Sept. 7, 1946.
Onesi was a member of the Fire Department for 33 years, retiring in 1986.
On Oct. 30, 1963, he was temporarily paralyzed when a speeding police car crashed into the fire truck he was driving. It had just left the 10th Street firehouse, where Onesi was stationed most of his career, to respond to an alarm. Onesi's best friend, Firefighter Mark Pirolli, was killed in the collision; Onesi was thrown from the truck.
Onesi worked two full-time jobs during most of his fire career. He kept working for Empire Builders after his retirement from the Fire Department and retired from that firm in October 2001 after more than 40 years.
He was a member of the United Police and Fire Retirees Association of New York and Local 463, International Union of Operating Engineers.
Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Robert of Niagara Falls; two daughters, Cheryl Johnson of Syracuse and Patricia Bateson of Niagara Falls; three brothers, Joseph and John, both of Niagara Falls, and Anthony of Rocklin, Calif.; two sisters, Kathryn Rotundo of Niagara Falls and Mary DeCorse of Lewiston; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, South Avenue and 11th Street, following prayers at 8:45 in Spallino-Amigone Funeral Home, 1300 Pine Ave.
Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
