MARY (CORSARO) ONESI
MARRIED MORE THAN 80 YEARS

Mary and Paul Onesi were once the longest-married couple in the United States and were listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

When Onesi died in April 1998 at age 101, they had been married for more than 80 years and had attended the 50th wedding anniversaries of five of their gray-haired children.

Mrs. Onesi, 97, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after being stricken at home.

She had married at 13 and given birth to their first child at 14.

"It was another time," Onesi explained to reporters in 1997, after they were recognized by the Pine Avenue Business Association as "cittadini speciale," or special citizens."

"I didn't want to get married," Mrs. Onesi added. "I told them I was 13, but my father said I was 16."

Born Mary Corsaro in Punxsutawney, Pa., she married her 21-year-old husband in Clymer, Pa., in 1917. He had come from Italy at age 15. They lived in Clymer until moving to Niagara Falls in 1927.

Mrs. Onesi enjoyed cooking, baking, playing bingo and, most of all, entertaining and spending time with her family.

Survivors include four sons, Joseph of Jacksonville, Fla., Anthony of California, John of Niagara Falls and Sylvester of Bergholz; two daughters, Kathryn Rotundo of Niagara Falls and Mary "Mimi" DeCorse of Lewiston; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1055 N. Military Road, after prayers at 9:15 in Spallino-Amigone Funeral Home, 1300 Pine Ave.

Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
