"Last Honors Paid to City Pioneer"
In the little church where he was baptisted 70-odd years ago, Hallen Tucker "Bap" Cornelius lay in state this morning.
At 10:30am old-timers crowded into the "original" First Baptist Church at 12th and Tyler to hear the pastor, Dr. Winifred Moore, say the simple last rites for one of the first children born in Amarillo.
Bap's father, Hartwell Tucker Cornelius, was in the party of seven men who settled Old Town Amarillo. His sister Mayvi Amarillo Cornelius-Smith was the first child born in the village.
The family came by covered wagon to the tent town on old Wild Horse Lake, and were among the first to move to the "new town" laid out on the hill to the east by H.B. Sanborn.
Bap was to become one of the first members of the First Baptist Church, which then stood at 500 Pierce. The old building was moved to the 12th street location adjacent to the present half-block edifice of First Baptist during the 75th anniversary of the church in 1964.
Mr. Cornelius is survived by 3 sons, 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild all of whom - as Cornelius do - still live in Amarillo.
