Charles and his older sister, Mary Ann (died Lucas, born Jones, aka Moy) were baptised on 3 November 1852 by Rev. White at the Presbyterian Church at Whittingham. Their parents are Charles Jones (abt. 1814 - 1878) and Elizabeth (death registered in the last name Hornery, born Reynolds, aka Honery/ Honary, and Jones).

His parents never married. Elizabeth had left her husband John Honary around March 1846 but the first evidence of her being with anyone else is when Charles and Mary Ann are baptised six years later. His sister Mary Ann is recorded as having been born at 'Barwin' in May 1847, so conceived in late 1846. Charles's birth was shown to have been in October 1850, although it does not record a place of birth and simply shows his parents' abode as 'Barwin', and his father Charles' occupation as 'Stock keeper'.

Charles' Death Certificate in 1922 (informed by his son-in-law) shows his place of birth as Wollombi, but the death certificate is also wrong in a number of other respects so may not be correct. His mother's twin sister, Catharine (Catherine) Riley (born Reynolds, aka Becket, and Siburey) lived at Wollombi until at least 1866, so it could be that Charles was born there while his mother visited to give birth. On the other hand, in 1985, Gertrude Jones (Smith) confirms the understanding that Charles, her father-in-law was, "born on the Barwon".

It is noted that as well as what is noted above for Charles, his brother James was recorded as being born at 'Barwon River' in 1855, and his siblings Ruben and Elizabeth were both born at "Burrowa" in 1859 and "Boorooma" in 1862 respectively. This is considered to most likely be Old Boorooma Station on the Barwon River [the current address is 43503 Kamilaroi Hwy, Walgett NSW 2832] as Elizabeth's birth is informed about 5 weeks after her birth in Wee Waa. This property was owned by the White family and Charles Sr is known to have worked for them at times.

On 30 Mar 1871, Charles married Elizabeth Riley at Bellevue (which later became the village of Gundy). Their first child, Selina, was born almost exactly 10 months later.

Charles died on 25 Feb 1922 at the age of 71. His death certificate notes that he was both an 'old age pensioner' and 'farmer', who had suffered from tuberculosis for the 12 years prior. It also confirms that he married Elizabeth at age 21. Charles was buried on 26 February 1922. Charles and Elizabeth are buried together in a shared plot in the cemetery at Gundy, New South Wales. Just in front of their grave is the headstone for Sarah (Riley) Wilkinson who was Elizabeth's sister but who married Charles's father just before he died and then when on to marry Joe Wilkinson.

There are many issues with the facts on Charles' death certificate. It is problematic in so many ways that it almost beggars belief. There is no doubt that the person is the Charles born by Charles Jones (Sr) and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Hornery, although neither his parents' names (Thomas Jones and Mary Turnbull?) nor his place of birth (Wollombi?) are correct. Perhaps this is explainable as his mother and father died 47 and 44 years earlier respectively, around 20 years before the informant, William Cooper married Charles' eldest daughter Selina? This does not, however, explain where the alleged parents' names and Charles place of birth came from.

Are the death details so wildly inaccurate as to suggest that they were intentional? There are certainly no marriages recorded in NSW in the 19th century between any 'Thomas Jones' and a wife with the maiden name 'Turnbull'. Nor are there any potentially relevant legitimate births of a son of that name to parents with those names, or any illegitimate births of a son 'Charles' to a mother 'Mary Turnbull'. The discrepancies seem unexplainable at this point.
