Samuel came from PA. with his parents Peter and Eliza, natives of PA. and his father was a farmer in Bedford Co., and Fayette Co., PA. and moved to Urbana, IL. in 1861. Samuel married Olive L Gere 1868. Samuel then remarried Elizabeth E. Alkire in 1890 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co., IL. He as a lawyer With the office of W.D. Somers, then the "Mecca" of law students and was admitted to the bar in 1865. He practiced law until 1885, when he took charge of the post office, he was appointed to by President Cleveland. He was city attorney for five terms and was vigilant and efficient as an officer.
