Lois Earle Aten, 71, beloved piano teacher and long time resident of Brownsville, Texas, was called home to be with the Lord Sunday, August 6, 2006 following a lengthy illness. The daughter of Earl and Maude Hamilton, she was born April 16, 1935 in Shattuck, Oklahoma where she grew up and graduated in 1953 with honors as Class Valedictorian from Shattuck High School. She began studying piano at an early age and was the pianist for the Shattuck First Christian Church from the time she was 16, when she began her piano teaching career which continued for 55 years until this past Christmas. She moved with her parents to Edmond, Oklahoma in 1954 and attended Midwest Christian College in Oklahoma City. She was married to Pastor Wilbur R. Aten in Shattuck April 8, 1955, living in parsonages in Peabody, Kansas; Pierre, South Dakota and Borger, Texas prior to moving to Brownsville in 1967. A dedicated student of the Scriptures, she taught a number of ladies Bible study classes over the years, including the ladies group at the Rio Hondo (TX) Community Church for the past 19 years. Baptized in the Shattuck First Christian Church, she was the pianist for the First Christian Church in Peabody, Kansas; the First Church of Christ in Pierre, South Dakota; the University Heights Christian Church in Borger, Texas; the organist for Central Christian Church in Brownsville, Texas and organist for the Community Church in Rio Hondo, Texas, where she was most recently a member. She was also a member of the Texas Federated Music Teachers Association, the National Guild of Piano Teachers, the Rio Grande Valley Piano Teachers Association and the American College of Musicians. In addition to her piano teaching, she was Chairman of the National Piano Guild Auditions locally for many years, participating in numerous music festivals and activities throughout the Valley. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved and served God faithfully, she leaves her husband of 51 years; four sons, Mark, of Los Fresnos, Texas; Scott and wife, Lisa, of Cleburne, Texas; Lane and wife, Mary, of Brownsville, Texas; Todd and wife, Leigh, of Brownsville, Texas; two granddaughters, Lindsay and Kelsay Aten of Cleburne, Texas; one brother, Dale Hamilton and wife, Annette, of Hinton, Oklahoma; one niece, Andrea Hamilton Wendorf and husband, Scott, of Dallas, Texas; and a host of other relatives, friends and piano students who will miss her greatly. A memorial service and celebration of life was conducted at the International Christian Center in Brownsville, Saturday, August 12, 2006 with burial in Brownsville's Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery. Contributions are being made in her memory to the International Seamen's Center, P. O. Box 4033, Brownsville, Texas 78523-4033, a ministry to the merchant seamen who come to the Port of Brownsville from all over the world, founded by her husband 32 years ago. More than 435,000 seafarers from 181 different countries have been served to date.
