James was a retired engineer for Southern Railway. He married first Lillie Margaret Wood in Hawkins County, TN. They had one son, John William Lee. Lillie died July 29, 1900 in Hawkins County, TN. John William Lee died on June 5, 1948, and is buried in Freedom Cemetery in Pulaski County, KY. James married second Betha Mae Burns on Dec. 26, 1901 in Blount County, TN. He and Betha lived at 306 Oldham Ave. N.W. (previously 234 W. Oldham) in Knoxville, TN for many years until his death.
They had 8 children: Lillie Mae, James Lawson, Jesse Clyde, Robert J., Howard Eugene, Albert Ralph (Bill), Anna Belle and Trula Frances. James Lawson died at a young age, and his burial place is unknown.
