Elmer A. Arthur, 79, of Mason City, died Monday (November 26, 2012) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (December 1, 2012) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastors Mark and Cassie Hicks presiding. Military honors will be provided by members of the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Elmer Arnut Arthur was born on June 4, 1933 in Clarion, Iowa the son of Gaylen Earl and Bertha Alice (Lundy) Arthur. He attended and graduated from Clarion High School amongst the class of 1950 before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Elmer honorably and faithfully served his country during the Korean War where he attended Intelligence School at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado before being stationed in London, England where he worked in Air Force Intelligence. On August 6, 1955 he was honorably discharged from the Air Force at Manhattan Air Force Base in New York.

Following his time in the Air Force Elmer attended Luther College as well as the University of Iowa, majoring in history.

On December 29, 1957 Elmer was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Wigg in Clarion; this union would be blessed with six children.

For over 27 years Elmer served the communities of Mason City, Clinton, Marshalltown, and Webster City as a claims specialist with the State of Iowa Employment Services, he served twenty of those years as an assistant manager before retiring in October of 1983.

Elmer had a gift of compassion and was always willing to help others in need to the best of his ability. He had a true sense of caring that was evident to everyone he met.

In his free time Elmer enjoyed fishing, gardening, NASCAR, and collecting a little bit of everything! He cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren and could always keep his family entertained with the stories he would tell.

Those grateful in sharing in Elmer's life are his children, Sheryl Arthur, Mason City, Joel Arthur, Mason City, Sandra (Doug) Neuberger, Clear Lake, Jim Arthur, Mason City, and Jeff (Jacquelyn) Arthur, Mason City; and their mother, Phyllis Arthur, Mason City; his grandchildren, Rachelle, Spencer, and Elliott Neuberger, Kyle and Andrew Arthur, and Dylan McLaughlin; his siblings, Leo (Carole) Arthur, Clarion, Lelon (Carol) Arthur, Clarion, Gale Arthur, Alexander, and Wayne (Barb) Arthur, Alexander; his sisters in law, Maureen Arthur, Donna Arthur, Aileen Arthur, and Judy Weir; as well as his extended family and many friends.

Elmer is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter in infancy, Linda Sue; granddaughter, Olivia Neuberger; sister, Sadie Scott and her husband, Ed; brothers, Alvin Arthur, Eldon Arthur, and Archie Arthur; sister in law, Gloria Arthur; and nephew, Robert Arthur.
