Robert J. Flick, 61, of 1011 Victoria Place, died at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at home surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with mesothelioma (asbestos cancer).

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3:30 p.m.

Bob proudly worked as a firefighter with the Dubuque Fire Department for 30 years and worked part-time at Thermolyne for 37 years.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Elwood and Ludwina (Manders) Flick. He married Joan C. Rubel on Sept. 2, 1967, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Springbrook, Iowa.

He served in the Navy from December 1958 to September 1963. He was a member of St. Columbkille's Parish, the Order of the Eagle-Boy Scouts of America, the Dubuque Conservation Society, the Dubuque Firemen's Retiree Association and the Electrical Workers Local 704.

He liked camping and hunting and was an avid bow hunter and a faithful Green Bay Packers fan. He was an accomplished woodworker and often made cribs and other furniture for his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and he loved life. Being with his family and grandchildren was his greatest joy. He will be missed by all who have touched his life.

Surviving are his wife, Joan C. Flick; three daughters, Christine E. (David) Hocker, of Marengo, Iowa, Lisa M. (Michael) Ellis, of Peoria, Ill., and Kathleen A. (Jamie) Rochleau, of Webster City, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Joan (Robert) Waddick, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters in infancy.

A Robert J. Flick Memorial Fund has been established.

Do not miss him - for he is not gone - in our hearts forever. His spirit within us, around us, eternal - protecting loved ones.

We will love you forever.
