Joan C. Flick, age 71, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at 6:55 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa, following a short and sudden illness.

To honor Joan's life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 14, 2015, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, 1230 Rush Street, with Rev. Gabriel C. Anderson officiating. To celebrate Joan's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2015, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where the rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. Entombment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

Joan was born on May 15, 1944, in Maquoketa, Iowa, daughter of Edward J. and Carmen M. (Eganhouse) Rubel.

Joan received her education from Marquette Catholic High School in Bellevue and Bayless Business College in Dubuque. After college, she met Robert "Bob" J. Flick, whom she realized was quickly becoming the love of her life. On September 2, 1967, they were united in marriage at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Springbrook. They embraced life together, hand in hand, for 34 beloved years until sadly, Bob was called home to be with the Lord on December 18, 2001. Bob and Joan were blessed with 3 daughters and Joan's heart, now completed with her family in place, would beat daily with the simple joys and tasks of raising her family. Joan enjoyed family boating trips on the Mississippi River and traveling across the Midwest, especially when her journeys would present the precious opportunity to hug her children and grandchildren. Joan became a diligent social butterfly in her later years and welcomed new experiences and friends into her life with open arms. Joan is now again alongside her one and only true love and the abundant memories of her beautiful life are surely left to be cherished by those she treasured so deeply.

Joan is survived by 3 daughters, Christine (Dave) Hocker, Marengo, IA, Lisa Ellis, Evanston, IL, and Kathleen (Jamie) Rochleau, Huxley, IA; 9 grandchildren, Jason (Sara) Hocker, Audubon, IA, Adam (Olivia) Hocker, Williamsburg, IA, Olivia (Brad) Curtin, North Liberty, IA, Baylie, Cole and Trey Robert Ellis, Evanston, IL and Elijah, Erin and Emily Rochleau, Huxley, IA; 8 great-grandchildren, Addesyn, Hudson, Charlie, Grant, Ava, Ian, Payton and Dawson; 4 sisters, Mary (Les) Lenstra, Dubuque, IA, Elizabeth (Ron) Juergens, Carroll, IA, Barb (Steve) O'Rourke, Ames, IA, and Ann (Vincent) Lehmkuhl, Blue Grass, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert J. "Bob" Flick; a brother, James "Jim" Rubel; her father and mother-in-law, Elwood J. and Ludwina (Manders) Flick; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Joan (Flick) Waddick; and 3 infant sisters, Marcella Marie, Ruth Ann and Rita Ann Rubel.
