He was born on April 5, 1917 at home in Bancroft, SD, the son of Guy A. and Lucille (Wold) LaMont. He attended country schools in the area and has lived in the Bancroft, Willow Lake area his entire life.
On April 23, 1938 he was united in marriage to Olive (Riter) at Watertown. They celebrated their 74th anniversary in 2012 with a family gathering in the Black Hills and took a ride on the 1880’s Train as part of the celebration at which time they received a special recognition by the conductor. They lived their lives in Rosedale Township, raising 4 boys together, sharing the good and bad times.
Walter often told stories of the 30’s and how they persevered through the challenges of that time. He also talked many times about how the neighbors worked together to thrive and survive.
He enjoyed raising Hereford cattle and training horses. In addition to making a living, it was a good opportunity for teaching the boys responsibility and dedication. Work and family were Walter’s top priorities. In his free moments he enjoyed woodworking in his basement, especially making diamond willow canes.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Olive in 2013, his parents, a daughter-in-law, Linda, his sisters, Doris (Vernon) Neuberger, brothers, Ray (Florence), Stanley (Dorothy), two grandchildren, three nephews and two nieces.
Walter is survived by his four sons, Roger (Sharon) LaMont of Carpenter, Rodney (Joyce) LaMont of Sturgis, Merlyn LaMont of Glenham, and Myron (Vicki) LaMont of Willow Lake, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
