She grew up and attended school in Galena, Kansas. Her parents died while she was young, and she was raised by her sister Bernice. She then moved with her family to California.
On November 27, 1961, she was united in marriage to Ronald Ashby at Bellevue, Washington. They lived in California for 3 years before moving to Giltner, Nebraska. She moved to Grand Island in 1991.
Phyllis had attended the Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Doniphan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers John and Tone Bankson, and 2 sisters, Grace Bankson and Jenell Talley.
Those who remain to cherish her memory are 2 sons, Greg Ashby of Giltner and Jeff Ashby of Aurora; 2 daughters, Tanya Gray of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania and Melissa Hinrichs of Aurora, 3 sisters, Mable Miller of Harbor City, California, Ann Price of Chino, California, and Bernice Cooper of Madera, California, and 7 grandchildren.
