Lester Graham Johnson Oct. 6, 1924 - April 29, 2015
Lester Graham Johnson, 90, passed away peacefully at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC, on April 29, 2015. Graham was born in Winston-Salem, NC, and spent most of his life there until retiring to Surfside Beach, SC. He is predeceased by his parents, Lee Gurney Johnson and Thalia Brown Johnson, his sister Mary Lou Needham, and his wife of 61 years, Jacqueline White Johnson. He is survived by his wife Audrey Bridges Johnson; his four children, Anne Hartis of Georgetown, SC, David Johnson of Cary, NC, Jeff Johnson of Chapel Hill, NC, and Gary Johnson of Orlando, FL, and their spouses; four grand-daughters; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rachel Hallen of Atlanta, GA, and Sylvia Criner of Raleigh, NC. Graham was a fun-loving and hard-working man who prided himself on providing a comfortable life for his parents, wife, and four children. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps during World War II. He had a long career in the food brokerage business as a partner in the Charles A. Bunn Company in Winston-Salem. Graham and Jackie were long-time members of Ardmore United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. His pastime activities included travel, socializing with friends, and spending time with his family. Camping was an enjoyable part of Graham's family life, and his family's most frequent camping destination was Myrtle Beach, SC. Because of their love for the Myrtle Beach area and the friendships they made there, Graham and Jackie decided to move to that area when he retired in the mid 1980's. They lived in Ocean Lakes for many years before moving later to Deerfield Plantation in Surfside Beach. After Jackie passed away, Graham met and married Audrey Bridges of Harrisburg, NC, in 2012. Graham and Audrey continued to live at the Surfside Beach residence until early 2015. Audrey provided companionship, love, and support for Graham during his last few years, and her family often referred to him as "Papa Graham." Graham was a loving husband and father, and he will be remembered for the many positives he brought to his family and others. Graham's ashes will be placed alongside Jackie's at the columbarium at Ardmore United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at Ardmore United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5th. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages persons to donate to their favorite charities in honor of Graham.
