James Dean "“Jim” " Mayfield
July 6, 1934 - September 23, 2015

Our beloved father, grandfather and friend passed away on September 23, 2015, at the age of 81, in Ivins, Utah, from causes incident to age and Parkinson’s Disease.

Jim was born July 6, 1934 in Farmington, Utah, to Leo Taylor and Louise Ware Mayfield. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He also served an LDS Mission to the California/Arizona area.

Jim married his sweetheart, Gladys Dodgen, on December 18, 1959, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He attended school at Brigham Young University and graduated with a teaching degree from Utah State University. He worked as a schoolteacher in the Davis County School District for 30 years. He was a well loved and respected teacher, and enjoyed object lessons and sharing knowledge, writing his own lesson plans and going the extra mile to get a point across. His hard work resulted in the award of a two-week NASA workshop which was a highlight of his career.

He wrote several books on his life, beliefs and values.

Along with his youthful mission, he also served three missions with his wife, Gladys: one to the Washington, D.C., LDS Temple; another to the Geneva, Switzerland, LDS Institute; and one to Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Jim was passionate about service, and would have continued to serve missions, if health and life had allowed it.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gladys, his siblings Maxine Howell, Darrell Mayfield, John Mayfield, and son-in-law Paul Winchester. He is survived by his children Debra (Ron) Bowman, Natalie Mayfield, Douglas (Heidi) Mayfield, Sandra Winchester, and Brenda (Scott) Wendt. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their love and appreciation for all of Dad’s wonderful friends, especially Sharon Elliott, Lois Johnson, Jeff Draney and Ann and Earl Hess. Much thanks also goes to the wonderful staff and caregivers at the Southern Utah Veterans Home; CNS Nursing Services of Southern Utah; and Journey of Hope Hospice.

A viewing will be held at the Kaysville 17th Ward Chapel, 875 East 200 North, Kaysville, on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at noon, Thursday, October 1, 2015. Friends may also call at the chapel from 10-11:30 a.m. before the funeral services.

Interment will be in the Kaysville City Cemetery, 500 Crestwood Road, Kaysville, Utah.

Services under the direction of Leavitt’s Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah.
