Matilda “Tillie” A Hewitt was born Aug. 17, 1846 in Mill Run, PA to Thos W Hewett and Ann Shoemaker.

Matilda was married to Lt William J Leahy. He was elected Sheriff of Clinton County, PA in 1887 and served one term.

The water in the jail was between three and four feet deep. Sheriff Leahy was prepared for deep water. Mrs. Leahy had a large quantity of provisions cooked and taken up stairs, and when the water came on the floor of the jail the prisoners were all removed to the upper cells, where they were kept until water subsided. Several families, about thirty persons in all, sought safety in the jail and were cared for the the Sheriff and Mrs. Leahy.

W J Leahy, who was sheriff of Clinton County when Cleary was committed, says in his letter dated April 25, 1892:
“I was the sheriff of Clinton county in March 1889, when Charles Cleary was arrested, for the homicide of Philip Paul. I had charge of the jail at that time and remained in charge until the first Monday of January, 1891. During that time the behavior of Charles Cleary was most satisfactory. He manifested the deepest contrition for his act. I attended both trials of the case and am familiar with all the evidence produced, and all the circumstances surrounding the case. I deem this a proper case for commutation.”

1910 Sandy, Clearfield, PA, William J Leahy 69 born about 1841 Ireland, arrived 1846, a Post Master, owned home at Jefferson Ave, Matilda A 63 born about 1847 PA, married 43 years with no children, Jessie A Yale 23 a servant and her child Charles E Yale 5.

Matilda died on Aug. 16, 1915 at Philadelphia, PA She was 69 years old and married. Matilda was taken to Lock Haven, PA for her burial in St Mary’s Cemetery.

Leathy (Leahy) – Mrs. W. J. Leathy, wife of ex-sheriff Leathy, died Monday at the Methodist hospital, Philadelphia. The remains were brought to this city where funeral services were conducted from the Church of the Immaculate Conception Wednesday morning.
