Bernice was born on June 15, 1913 in Whitelaw, daughter of the late Joe and Francis (Koerner) Fischer. She attended St. Michaels School, Whitelaw, and Manitowoc Vocational School. On June 17, 1937 Bernice married Harold Gerl at St. Michaels Church, Whitelaw. He preceded her in death on October 15, 1995. She was first employed as a telephone operator for Commonwealth Telephone Company, Whitelaw Exchange. Later she was employed with Lutz Tailors, Manitowoc for 20 years. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi, Daughters of Isabella and the Manitowoc Senior Center. Bernice was a volunteer knitter for Holy Family Memorial Medical Center Family Beginnings for 15 years and knitted over 100 baby caps. She also loved to travel, sew, and knit.
Survivors include a daughter: Beverly, Manitowoc; a daughter-in-law: Sandie Gerl, Apache Junction, Arizona; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
Bernice was also preceded in death by a son: Jerry on August 11, 2004; a brother; two sisters; five sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, (1416 Grand Ave., Manitowoc). Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier. Burial will be at St. Michael Catholic Church Cemetery, Whitelaw.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand.
