Our much-loved husband, father, brother and uncle, Spiro "Sam" Babalis, 72, passed away April 25, 1997 of complications related to diabetes.
Born October 20, 1924 in Portland, Oregon to Gust S. and Anastasia Zahmanides Babalis. He married Maxine Calevas on September 18, 1950.
He was raised and educated in Salt Lake City, Utah; graduating from South High School in 1942 and receiving his B.S. degree from the University of Utah in 1951.
Sam served 23 years with the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of major. He formerly served as a supervisor with the Utah State Tax Commission and as an appraiser with the Salt Lake County Assessor's Office. He was active in the Greek Orthodox Community of Salt Lake.
He loved sports, playing golf and playing cards with the BBOA.
He will be greatly missed by those who survive him, his wife, Maxine; children, Catherine; Stephanie; Sam Jr. (Denver, CO); Joni (New York, NY); sister, Lillian B. Boles; brothers, James and Bob (Maxine); his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Pete (Sheryl).
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 1997, 12 noon at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 279 So. 300 West, Salt Lake City. Friends may call Monday, April 28, from 6-8 p.m. at Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 700 So. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Greek Orthodox Church in the memory of Spiro S. Babalis.
