Lancaster bomber, AR F2, (PB 471), 460 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force was shot down by German night fighters when returning from a raid on Dortmund in the Ruhr Valley. The aircraft crashed at Linkout in the Belgian province of Limberg. The crew, with the exception of the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Alexander Elliott Jenkins, were all killed. Flt Lt Jenkins bailed out and was able to evade capture before eventually meeting up with advancing allied forces. The six deceased crew members were temporarily buried at Zelem.
Flying Officer Bernard Clegg (Wireless Operator) perished with the other five crew members, namely,
Flight Sergeant Bryant Braddock (Mid Upper Gunner)
and
Flying Officer Sydney Clifton Swift (Navigator)
and
Flight Sergeant Herbert Thomas Campbell (Bomb Aimer)
and
Flight Sergeant Frank Samuel Stone (Flight Engineer)
and
Flight Sergeant Alan Graham (Rear Gunner)
