Alexander served with the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. He was the pilot of Lancaster Bomber AF F2 (PB471) of the 460 Squadron which was shot down by German night fighters when returning from a raid on Dortmund in the Ruhr Valley on 21 February 1945. The aircraft crashed at Linkout, Limberg, Belgium. Alex bailed out and was able to evade capture before meeting up with advancing allied forces. He was the only survivor of a seven man crew. On his return to Britain he flew missions until the end of the War.
A street in Belgium is named after him.
After the war he studied at University and obtained a PhD Doctorate in 1952. He held the position of Professor of Mining and Materials Engineering at Sydney University. After his retirement he held the position of Emeritus Professor (BMetE MEngSc PhD Melbourne, FIM FIEAust MAIMM MAIM (1984) of the University of Sydney.
He died aged 92 years.
