JOHN G. FORDYCE, farmer and stock-grower, born in Gilmore Township, February 14, 1841, is a son of Corbly and Jane (Bailey) Fordyce. His parents were also natives of this county, and of English extraction. His father, who was a farmer and stock-grower all his life, was reared in Greene County. He died in 1862, leaving a family of twelve children, of whom John G. is the sixth. He was reared in Gilmore Township, on the farm where his brother resides. He received a common-school education, then engaged in farming as an occupation, and is now one of the most successful farmers in the county. He owns 400 acres of valuable land. In 1866, Mr. Fordyce married Jane Huffman, and they were the parents of two children - Dora and Charles. Mrs. Jane Fordyce died in 1877, a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Fordyce was afterwards united in marriage, in 1878, with Miss Anna, daughter of Phillip and Lydia (Kennedy) Phillips, and they have one son - Phillip Corbly. Mr. and Mrs. Fordyce are prominent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

It is with deep sorrow that we chronicle, this week, the death of John G. Fordyce, Esq., one of Waynesburg's most esteemed and worthy citizens. Several weeks ago he was taken ill with grip, from which developed serious stomach trouble and other complications. On last Sunday and Monday his condition was considered alarming, but on Tuesday he had improved to such an extent that the family were hopeful of his recovery. Tuesday evening about eight o'clock, however, he grew mich weaker and at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday morning, March 20, his spirit departed . John G. Fordyce was born at the Fordyce homestead, in Gilmore township, Feb. 14, 1841, his parents being Corbly and Jane Baily Fordyce, deceased. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in Co. F, Seventh Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and was chosen a coporal of the company. This company was mustered into service Sept. 18, 1861, and from its ranks was killed the first Greene county soldier who fell in the civil war. Mr. Fordyce was wounded at the battle of Antietam and subsequently received an honorable discharge. He returned home and for many years was successfully engaged in dealing in live stock and the purchase of wool. He also carried on farming extensively. He was a man known throughout his life for honesty in all business tranactions, for strictest integrity and uprightness of character. He was genial and made everybody his friend. Four years ago he and his family removed to Waynesburg where they have been held in highest esteem by our people. He was a member of Philip Gump Post No. 558, of Jolleytown. Many years ago he united with the Tom's Run M. E. church, and since removing here his membership was transferred to the Waynesburg M. E. church. He was an attendant at all religious services and took much interest in church work. In 1866, Mr. Fordyce was united in marriage to Miss Jane Huffman, who died eleven years later. In 1878, Mr. Fordyce was united in marriage with Miss Anna Phillips, who with two children by the first marriage, Miss Dora Fordyce, of Ancona, Ill., and Charles Fordyce, of Waynesburg, and one son by the second marriage, Corbly Fordyce, of Waynesburg, are left to mourn his demise. Deceased is survived by three brothers, Dr. G. Fordyce, of Ancona, Ill.; J. B. Fordyce, of Pine Bank; Homer Fordyce, of East Waynesburg, and three sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Rice, of Jolleytown; Mrs. Wm. Huffman, of Bluff; and Mrs. Thos. B. Smith, of Urichsville, O. To the entire family the sympathy of our people is extended in their bereavement. The funeral will be held from the residence on Friday at 1 p.m., services will be conducted by Rev. J. B. Taylor, Rev. J. E. Garvin and Rev. Cain. Interment in Oakmont cemetery.
