Mark Walrod Harrington

Mark Walrod Harrington was born in 1848 at Sycamore, Illinois, his 
father being of old New England stock, and his mother belonging to the
 New York Walradt family, originally from Holland. He was educated
 at Evanston and at Ann Arbor, graduating as A.B. from the University 
of Michigan in 1868. Soon after graduation he entered the Museum of 
the University as Assistant Curator. In 1870 he was made instructor in
 French and Mathematics, besides attending to his duties in the Museum. 
In 1871 he went to Alaska as Astronomical Aid in the U. S. Coast Survey
 reconnaissance, conducted by W. H. Dall. He returned to the University of Michigan in 1872, and was made instructor in Geology, Zoology
 and Botany. The next year he was appointed Assistant Professor of 
the same subjects. In 1876 he was granted leave of absence for two 
years and went to Leipzig to study.

In 1877 he was appointed Professor of Astronomy and Mathematics
 in the Cadet School of the Chinese Foreign Office. In 1879 he was made
 Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Observatory at Ann Arbor, 
succeeding Watson. In 1891 he was made Chief of the Weather Bureau,
 after Congress had resolved to place it under a scientific head.
 Professor Harrington has travelled extensively and his studies have 
taken a wide range, embracing Botany, Astronomy, Mathematics, Geo
graphy and Meteorology. He is an honorary member of many learned
 bodies, and was President of the World's Congress of Meteorologists at
 Chicago in 1893.

Michigan for the years, 1868-1893; Chief of the U. 
S. Weather Bureau, 1890-1895; and President of 
the University of Washington, 1895-1897, died in 
the New Jersey State Hospital at Greystone Park, 
 N. J., on October 9, 1926, at the age of seventy-nine
 years.
During the years from 1868 to 1893 he in
terrupted his work at the University of Michigan 
several different times. Two years, 1870-71, were 
spent in Alaska as acting astronomical aid in the
 United States Coast Survey's reconnaissance; later, 1876, he studied at the University of Leipzig for one
 year with another year in Peking as Professor of
 Astronomy and Mathematics in the Cadet School of
 the Chinese Foreign Office.
Professor Harring
ton was an honorary member of the German Meteor
ological Society and the Sociedad Cientiflca of 
Mexico, and a fellow of the Linnaean Society, and
 of the Royal Meteorological Society. He founded
 the "American Meteorological Journal" in 1884, and 
edited the first seven volumes. He was also the 
author of numerous scientific papers and received 
the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the 
University in 1894. Mr. Harrington had been in the 
hospital where he died since 1907, where he was placed after being found wandering about the 
streets of Trenton seven years after his strange dis
appearance from home.

He served about one year in the Civil War and then went to Kansas, where in Jewell County, he homesteaded a farm in 1871. In 1872, he returned to Sycamore, Ill., and was married and took his bride back to Kansas. He was City Marshall of Jewell, Kan., in 1885, and while attempting to arrest a horse thief, Jacob Loy, he was shot and survived only 12 hours. He had moved from his homestead into the county seat in 1883.

He graduated from University of Michigan in 1868, and lectured on Astonomy in Cherlin College, Ohio, and at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, La.; for a year he was connected with the Chinese foreign office in Peking, China, and spent one year in Alaska. The he was professor of Astonomy at University of Michigan, then head of the Weather Bureau at Washington, D.C., then President of Washington State University.
-William Shaw, b. New South Berlin, N.Y., after 1848; he died in Seattle, Wash., 1922; m. Elizabeth, he was a Methodist Preacher.
-Mary Sylvia, b. Sycamore, Ill., before 1850. She was youngest child, and she and her brother spent school year 1864-65 at Ann Arbor, in the University of Michigan.

-Mark Raymond of N.Y. City, b. at Ann Arbor, Mich., July 6, 1882; resided N.Y.C.; m. Edna L. Parker. He was associated wit hthe Museum of American Indians at Broadway and 155th Sts., N.Y.C. In 1930 he was advanced from field worker to Curator of South West Museum of the University of California. He had then been with the South West Museum for about a year and a half.
His wife, Edna L. Parker, was a direct descendant of the famous Iroquois Indian prophet, Handsome Lake, and Gen. Eli S. Parker, full blooded Seneca Indian of Gen. Grant's staff. [She was a great niece of Eli S. Parker-KG]

James Harrington was the son of Lot Harrington and Sylvia Sage. James' paternal grandfather was Thomas and Freelove Herrington. The maternal grandparent of James were Daniel Sage (1756-1852) and Sybil Jewitt.

Just after James' birth, his mother, Sylvia Sage Harrington died. James was brought up by his Aunt and Uncle, Mr. and Mrs. William Shaw.

James' first wife was Charlotte Walrod. They were married on 22 January 1831, in Allegany County, New York, and moved to Sycamore, Illinois, in June of 1843, where she died in 1871. James then married Mrs. Susan Wyman the following year.

At age 17, he was teaching school and studying medicine during the rest intervals. He then moved to Eagle, New York in 1829, where he practiced medicine until 1831. After their marriage, they moved back to Chenango County, New York, where he practiced medicine until 1843, when he moved to De Kalb County, Illinois, and settled on a homestead four miles from Sycamore, where he and Charlotte had five children.

In 1846 James was a member of the Illinois Legislature and for 9 years was a member of the DeKalb County Board of Supervisors and served the entire period as chairman of the board. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

In 1864 he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where his two children, Mark Walrod, and Mary attended college. In 1865 he returned to Sycamore, Illinois, and bought property.

James had a half brother by the name of James Harrington. After the death of James' mother, Lot Harrington married Sarah Patterson. Lot and Sarah Patterson had one child, also named James Harrington, who was born in 1811 and died in 1897. James Harrington is buried in the Zion Cemetery, Blissfield, Lenawee County, Michigan.

Dr. James Harrington's son, Mark Walrod Harrington became president of the University of Washington. Mark Walrod Harrington's son was Mark Raymond Harrington. Mark Raymond Harrington was a published archeologist.
