"J. Frank Harrington was a sucker by birth, but he had at some time been a resident of Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Wyoming. He served one year in the 147th Illinois Infantry. He came to Kansas for the same reason he wandered over so much of the west, "to be a doing." A wagon and a yoke of steers was the amount of his effects when he settled here. Frank was a farmer and a cheese and butter maker and he worked at stone masoning some two years. He homesteaded on May 27, 1871. After baching awhile he went back to Illinois and married Etta Durant. Their children were Lottie C., Abby D. and Irene. In politics he was a Republican, Although he made no profession of religion, he believed the Methodists were in the straight and narrow way. He was elected treasurer of Prairie township November 7, 1877. Frank was a whole-souled man, one who could be depended upon to be on the right side at all times. He was killed by a lawbreaker near Jewell City while in the performance of his duty as marshall."
