He was a Dissenting Minister and lived in Queen Street, Chester. In the earlier part of his life he had spent more than three years as a missionary in India. His health was impaired by the climate so returned to England. He then went to St Petersburg, Russia, where he lived for 13 years. When he came back to England he was involved in promoting the London Missionary Society throughout England. He lived for 6 years at Wotton-under-Edge. For the last few years he had been Pastor of the Independent Chapel, Queen Street, Chester. He died after a long and protracted illness, aged 69 yrs. He was buried on the 8th January 1857.
