She was the daughter of James and Isabella Notman, a Quaker family. Her father served under two Russian Emperors, Paul and Alexander, as inspector general of tanneries in various parts of the empire. Sarah was born in St Petersburg in 1796. She was educated at 'the friends school,' in Ackworth and was fully acquainted with the Russian language and manners of Russian society. She was intimate with Nikolay Karamein, the great Russian historian, and was friends with Princess Mestchersky. She accompanied her parents to Kazan, Eastern Russia, where her father died. Her mother was nearly buried alive when she was in a trance for four days. Preparations were made for her burial but she was saved by the celebrated philanthropist John Howard. At this time Sarah was proffered the honour of marrying the Prince of Tartary, who afterwards became Khan but she turned him down. She married Richard Knill in 1822, at the Chapel of the English Embassy. Princess Mestchersky's two daughters were her bridesmaids. Her knowledge of the Russian language and society was a great help in promoting the circulation of the Scriptures in Russia. She died at the residence of her son-in-law, the Rev. Charles Chapman at 12 Macaulay Buildings, Bath, aged 74 yrs. She was buried on the 11th May 1870.
