James G. Swafford was a probate judge in Snohomish County, and was shown on the 1887 Snohomish County, Washington, census. He was age 72. May be burial date for James G. Swafford, instead of death date. But we know he was buried in the Snohomish Pioneer Cemetery.

Many of the burials in Snohomish Pioneer Cemetery have been removed and buried in area cemeteries. The cemetery land was given to the state to build the Hwy 2 freeway. This grave may have been buried elsewhere, but I have not heard. J. G. Swafford was on my list of original burials for this cemetery and no one seems to know what happened to his grave.

This cemetery was declared to have graves relocated to area cemeteries when the State approved a highway to go through the middle of the cemetery. Construction began, and only 111 burials were relocated, and nearly a minimum of 900 more were thought to be under present construction sites. The highway was relocated to another area in 1947 and the cemetery remained a divided cemetery with the road remaining through the middle of the north and south grounds. There were no clear and complete records taken on relocated burials.

There is currently no marker for this grave.

At the latter place and also at New Boston, Ill., he resided until 1850. At that time the gold fever in California was at is height and he started for the west leaving his wife at home. In the winter of '51-52 he returned home by way of the Isthmus and again on May 2, 1852, he started from Iowa city, Ia., to Oregon City, Or. His wife and his son Harry this time accompanied him on the trip across the plains. Oregon city was reached on October 27, the trip taking six months. He made Oregon city his home having purchased a farm, living there eight years. In 1860 the family moved to Portland where the father followed his vocation of a contractor. There he lived until 1876 when he moved to Seattle. In 1880 another move was made by the Swaffords going to Lowell where they remained for three years, coming to Snohomish in 1883, where he and his family have resided ever since.
During the time Judge Swafford lived in this county he has held many public positions of trust. For a number of years he was probate judge and justice of the peace. On April 1 he was appointed postmaster of this city which position he filled up to the time of his death...
One notable trait of Judge Swafford should not escape mention. For some years previous to her death his wife, who preceded him to the grave by about eighteen months, was a helpless paralytic. During all the time that she lay powerless Judge Swafford was as devoted as a mother to a child. Those who visited their home will testify to this fact; and it was his strength in qualities like these that gained him the respect and affection of all who enjoyed his acquaintance."
