Mr. Casterline was a Union Civil War veteran and member of Eugene GAR Post 7. He served in Company A, 4th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He received a disability discharge after contracting tuberculosis.
Mr. Casterline married Mary Emeline Cordell, 21 Novembwer 1867, Shakopee, Scott, Minnesota. He was the father of seven children: Barnabus J. Casterline, infant Casterline, William Madison Casterline, Charles Edward Casterline, Lenora Bell Casterline, Mary Janett Casterline, Maria E. Casterline.
In 2007 the original headstone, which was damaged and illegible, was replaced with a new VA headstone obtained and installed by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Casterline to his sister, Sarah J. Casterline Calkins, dated Dec 10, 1882, J. D. tells of the death of his father. In this letter he says he weighs 10 pounds more than when he enlisted. The 1882 letter referred to above indicates J. D. is living in Minnesota at that time. However, between then and 1888 when James died, the family moved to Oregon.

In this record, J. D. is shown as being born in New York, and Emeline in Illinois. J. D.'s occupation in this record is shown as Hotelkeeper. Death records show that this son, Chas. E. Casterline died on 3 Oct 1876 at age of one year and 4 months. This child is listed as dying of lung fever.

Casterline with a name that appears to be William H. Casterline. It is quite possible that this son and Wm Madison is the same person and the middle initial is really an "M" rather than an "H". William M. (H?) Casterline is shown in the 1900 Oregon census with an age of 27, a birthdate of Aug 1873, along with a wife Edith C., age 23, and children Emeline age 2, and Genevive age one.
