The son of Barnubus J. Casterline and Maria Elizabeth Dubois.

Mr. Casterline was a Union Civil War veteran and member of Eugene GAR Post 7. He served in Company A, 4th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He received a disability discharge after contracting tuberculosis.

Mr. Casterline married Mary Emeline Cordell, 21 Novembwer 1867, Shakopee, Scott, Minnesota. He was the father of seven children: Barnabus J. Casterline, infant Casterline, William Madison Casterline, Charles Edward Casterline, Lenora Bell Casterline, Mary Janett Casterline, Maria E. Casterline.

In 2007 the original headstone, which was damaged and illegible, was replaced with a new VA headstone obtained and installed by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

From Bill Boning: From several census' and from Civil War pension files, James was born about 1840 in NY and moved with his parents to MN before 1857. From the pension application files, James was married on Nov. 21, 1867 to Emeline Cordell. He was in the U.S. Army, 4th Minnesota Infantry. He enlisted on Mar. 31, 1862, and was discharged with lung disease on Dec. 8, 1862..., "has tuberculosis of right lung, is emaciated and much debilitated, and had cough and diarrhea and expectorates blood, and in the doctor's opinion will not again be capable of discharging the duties of a soldier."

James claimed that, while on duty at Fort Snelling, MN, in Apr. 1862, he was exposed to measles and the illness settled in his lungs and caused disease of the same - greatly incapacitating him for manual labor. Sometime between 1882 and 1888, the family moved to OR. He was living in Lane Co., OR at the time of his death. His widow filed a pension claim for support of her minor children. After Emeline's death, 1890, her son, Barnabus J. Casterline, was named guardian of the three youngest children: Lenora B.; Mary J; and Maria E.

From Bill's post at Genforum: From several census' and from Civil War pension files, James was born about 1840 in New York and moved with his parents to Minnesota before 1857. He is first found in the 1857 census living with his parents at age 18 in Spring Lake, Scott County, Minnesota. The 1860 census has him at age 19 still living with his parents in Spring Lake. He is also living with his parents in the 1865 census but age is not given.

From the pension application files James was married on 21 Nov, 1867 to Emeline Cordell, in Shakopee, Minnesota. This marriage ceremony was performed by C. G. Bowdish, a clergyman. The pension files refer to four children, Barnabus J., Lenora B., Mary Janett., and Maria E. The records in the pension application files indicates he was in the U. S. Army, 4th Minnesota Infantry. He enlisted on March 31, 1862, and was discharged with lung disease on Dec 8, 1862. His certificate of disability for discharge states he "has tuberculosis of right lung, is emaciated and much debilitated, has had cough and diarrhea and expectorates blood, and in the doctor's opinion will not again be capable of discharging the duties of a soldier."

In his original claim for an invalid pension, which was filed on 12 Dec 1876, James alleges that while in line of duty at Fort Snelling, Minnesota in April 1862, he was exposed to measles and contracted the same, which settled on his lungs and caused disease of the same and which greatly incapacitates him for manual labor. Various subsequent claims for increases in the pension were filed in following years, and some were granted. These claims were supported with affidavits by various persons, including W. H. Calkins in June, 1878 that they had known the claimant for many years and that he is greatly incapacited by the medical diseases he contracted during his tour of duty in the Army. James is shown in the 1870 census for Scott County, Minnesota and still living with his parents Barnabus and Maria E Casterline.

The Civil War pension files contain a copy of the marriage certificate of James Casterline and Emiline Cordell. This record shows the marriage date of November 21, 1867. The marriage was performed by C. G.(?) Bowdish, a clergyman, and witnessed by Frank McKennett and Sarah E. Cordell.
The 1875 census shows James age 35, born in Michigan, and parents born in Ireland [incorrect, other records show the parents both born in NY]; along with Emaline age 24, born in Illinois, and father born in Missouri and mother in Tennessee, and two children: Barnabus age 5 and William age 3.

The 1880 census shows James D. Casterline living in Lincoln County, Minnesota with his wife and four children: Barnabus, William H., Lenora, and Mary. In a letter from J. D. Casterline to his sister, Sarah J. Casterline Calkins, dated Dec 10, 1882, J. D. tells of the death of his father. In this letter he says he weighs 10 pounds more than when he enlisted. The 1882 letter referred to above indicates J. D. is living in Minnesota at that time. However, between then and 1888 when James died, the family moved to Oregon.

Pension application files show him living in Lane County, Oregon at the time of his death in May, 1888. Following his death, his widow, Emeline, filed a pension claim for support of her minor children. This claim was granted. After Emeline's death in 1890, his son, Barnabus J. Casterline, was named guardian of the three youngest children, Lenora B., Mary J., and Maria E., who were at that time under the age of 16.

In addition to the five children identified in census' or in pension files, the vital statistics of Scott County, Minnesota identify two additional children who died very young. Birth records show that a son of J. D. and Emiline Casterline was born on 2 July 1871 in Spring Lake, Minnesota. In this record J. D. is listed as a Hotelkeeper. Both J. D. and Emeline are shown in this record as being born in Indiana![incorrect]. Death records show an unnamed son of J. D. and Emeline Casterline died on 2 July 1871 in Spring Lake, Minnesota at the age of one day. Birth records show a Chas. Edw. Casterline born 29 May 1875 in Spring Lake, Minnesota. In this record, J. D. is shown as being born in New York, and Emeline in Illinois. J. D.'s occupation in this record is shown as Hotelkeeper. Death records show that this son, Chas. E. Casterline died on 3 Oct 1876 at age of one year and 4 months. This child is listed as dying of lung fever.

The birth records in Scott County also show Wm. Madison Casterline being born on 6 Aug 1872 to J. D. and Emeline Casterline. Various census' show a son of J. D. Casterline with a name that appears to be William H. Casterline. It is quite possible that this son and Wm Madison is the same person and the middle initial is really an "M" rather than an "H". William M. (H?) Casterline is shown in the 1900 Oregon census with an age of 27, a birthdate of Aug 1873, along with a wife Edith C., age 23, and children Emeline age 2, and Genevive age one.

Some say that he was born in Lincoln Co., MN.
