Christina Vulders was born in Portsmouth township to Caspars Vulders and Pharailda Kimpe. She was the oldest of their four children and the only one to marry and have children.

On September 17, 1907, she was united in Holy Matrimony to John Richard of Gilford, Michigan at St. James Church in Bay City. They purchased a farm in Portsmouth township, south of Bay City, and there raised their three sons and seven daughters.
