OBIT: SOUTH POINT MAN KILLED BY N & W YARD ENGINE.
Simeon Arthurs Is Accident Victim At Etna Street Siding
Body Discovered on Rails by Brakeman of Rail Crew
Simeon Arthurs, age 57 years, farmer and huckster of South Point, met instant death near Front & Etna Streets early Friday night when he was struck by a Norfolk and Western Railroad Yard Engine. His body was mangled but identification was made at the site by 2 of his sons, Joseph and John.
Mr. Arthurs, who was born and reared in the South Point neighborhood and who was widely known there, had been in Ironton Friday afternoon on business. It is believed he stepped in front of the yard engine as it came up the Markin-Blanton siding after having made a trip to the Unrue filling station to pull out a tank car. The mangled body was discovered by Brakeman G.G. Strewsberry of Ironton and Coroner J.S. King was notified. He authorized removal by Feuchter and Davidson after identification had been made by sons of the victim.
According to Conductor R. W. Hammonds the body was not on the rails when the engine made its first trip down the siding. He threw a switch to the Unrue tracks, he says, and the right-of-way was clear at that time. The engine picked up the tank car, backed up the siding and started back downtowards a spurt leading to the main lines. As Brakeman Strewsberry reached the switch block he noticed the body and spread the alarm. This indicates that Arthurs stepped in front of the train or was thrown from it, as it made it's return trip on that siding. Death probably came instantly for there was no out cry. The body was dragged for about 20 feet, evidence showed. Sons of the victim were among the first on the scene, both having spent the afternoon and evening in Ironton.
The train crew was made up of L.D. Willis as engineer, G.C. Strewsberryas brakeman, R. W. Hammonds as conductor and George Gool as fireman.
Mr. Arthurs is survived by his widow and five children, Dennis of Clarksburg, WV, Joseph of South Point, John, Dorothy and Millie all of South Point. He was a member of the South Point Masonic Lodge.
