William J. Hurley, 88, of Newbury, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2014. Mr. Hurley was the husband of Gloria A. (Coughlin). He was the devoted father of Mark J. Hurley and wife, Marion, of Marshfield, David J. Hurley and wife, Stephanie, of Kingston, Paul J. Hurley and wife, Judy, of Westford, Carol A. Moore and husband, Jesse, of Norwell, and Clare A. Boretti and husband, Scott, of Hingham. Bill was the brother of the lovely Margaret Humphrey of California. He is also survived by nine adoring grandchildren.

Mr. Hurley was a graduate of Boston Latin, Class of 1943, and Boston College, Class of 1950. He served bravely in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from July 1943 to March of 1946, serving on various submarines including the USS Bushnell (AS-15); USS Pilotfish (SS-386); and the USS Razorback (SS-394). His tours of duty took him to Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, Midway, and northern parts of Japan.

After graduating from Boston College, Mr. Hurley joined the U.S. Army during Korea, serving for many years until retiring from U.S. Army, Reserve with the rank of Major. In his professional career, Mr. Hurley worked for 38 years in the Boston Public School System as a Teacher and Administrator, until his retirement.

ARRANGEMENTS:
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 12, at 10 a.m., in Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main St., Route 228, Hingham, MA 02043. Visiting hours are Tuesday, November 11, from 3 to 7 p.m., at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, Norwell.

Interment in Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree, Mass.
