Pascal's headstone says he was born in 1833. However, 1838 is more likely. He is 12 on the 1850 census, 21 on the 1860 and age 23 on the August 1861 muster roll of Capt. Coffee's Co. E, 15th Reg., all consistent with an 1838 birth. Beginning with the 1870 census, he "becomes older", but the ages are not consistent with any one birth year. As example, on his June 6, 1899 Pension Application, he states he is 63, making his birth 1835. On a July 1911 affidavit, he states he was born 20 Oct. 1834 (and in Madison Co., AL). On the 1907 Confederate Veterans census he is listed twice, with 2 different birth dates. Page 4, #12 as 21 Oct. 1835 and page 5, #13 as 20 Oct 1837.

I have no clue who came up with the 1922 death date on the "new" headstone (put on sometime after May 2006), but that's definitely wrong. From both family history and his wife's application for Widow's Pension, signed and notarized April 10, 1918 (and granted May 15, 1918), Pascal died March 1, 1918.

WED Frances Elizabeth Whitt, December 21, 1869, Giles Co., TN, by Rev. Isaac Gatlin.

FATHER of Nancy Matilda (Marlow), Sallie Ann (McGuire), Mary Jane "Molly" (Malone), Laura Alice (Johnson), Franklin & David D. (Dee).

BROTHER of Mary Elizabeth (Medlock), Martha, Sidney B., Mahulda (Barr), Nancy & Charles. 1/2 brother of William W. "Willis" Waddell.

Pascal/Paschall (and his brother, Sidney/Sydney) served in the 16th AL, CSA Regiment of Infantry, Company C (Coffman's Co.). He entered service August 7, 1861 at Courtland. Was shot in the right hand and shoulder Sep. 20, 1863 at Chickamauga. Captured Macon, GA about April 1965. Held prisoner at Nashville, TN. Paroled May 1, 1865. As of 2006, the walking stick Pascal used to walk home from the war is in the possession of his McGuire great grandson.

From the book "As I Remember it" by Odie Jones; "Mr. Pack Broadwater, an old soldier that was in the War Between the States in 1861-1865, and his wife would visit us. I liked to hear him tell about the Civil War he was in. He would show me a large dent in front of his shoulder where a musket bullet went through and tell how the men would get shot and killed."

PASCAL'S PARENTS;
His mother's name is Nancy, born Mar 1812, AL (per 1900 census) and died after June 1, 1900 (cut off date for the census). She married 1st Wade Broadwater (see below), presumably in TN or AL. She married 2nd Emory Waddle/Waddel, Sep. 20, 1851, Limestone Co., AL. As of Feb. 2016, Nancy's maiden name, death place, death date (including year) and burial location have NOT been proven.

His father's name is being presented by some as Charles Wade Broadwater but to date (Feb 2016) no one has provided a shred of evidence to support the name Charles. I suspect the name Charles Wade has simply been morphed from "Working Data" that several researchers and I were using in the late 90s-early 2000s. Other than the 1850 census, we could not locate a Wade Broadwater, but there was a Charles, also b. SC. To follow both the names, to see if they MIGHT be the same man, we were using the name "Charlie/Wade" (with the source/explanation for each name). This was STRICTLY as a place holder, until the name could be properly proven. To my knowledge, the ONLY documentation for the man who is Nancy's husband/Pascal's father is the 1850 census; Wade "Breadwater", age 40, b. SC. We estimated his birth as 1809-1810, based solely on that census and his probable death as between 1 June 1849 (as the census includes persons who died within the census year, ie 1 June 1849-1 June 1850, would need Schedule 6, "Mortality schedule" to know if he's on it), and Sep. 20, 1851 (when Nancy married 2nd). It also can not be ruled out that Wade & Nancy divorced and he died sometime after her remarriage. To my knowledge, ZERO further documentation has been found on Wade and further research proved that Wade is clearly NOT the Charles Broadwater we'd found on the 1840 census in Fayette Co., TN. If anyone does have additional documentation, I would greatly appreciate hearing from them.
