** In Loving Memory of Sarah **
Sarah will be loved, missed and remembered in the hearts
of the many who loved her. Sarah grew up in a very large family.
Her Parents were Pioneers. Her Parents eventually settled and
retired in Gilmanton Buffalo Co. Wisconsin.
Sarah traveled with her husband William as they were also Pioneers.
Sarah was married to William when he enlisted
and served in the U.S. Military via Iowa Volunteer Infantry 38th Regiment
Union Army during the American Civil War. Sarah and Williams's
Son Edgar Miner also enlisted in the Volunteer Iowa Infantry when he was
18 yrs old and served with the same Regiments as his Father William.
Sarah and William Sr. eventually moved to Stark Township, Iberia, Brown Co.
Minnesota and finished raising their family there. Sarah and William lived
in Brown Co. MN the rest of their lives. It appears per the published
articles including them that they were very well liked and respected
in the Stark/Iberia Brown Co. Minnesota area community. They were very
active contributing Members of in their community. They were a
hard working proud Family. Sarah grew up in an active highly respected
hard working Pioneer Family.
The town of Gilmanton Buffalo Co. Wisconsin
was named after her Family of origin. Sarah's Family were the first
Pioneers in that Buffalo Co. area. Sarah and William were some
of the first Pioneers in their Brown Co. Minnesota community.
Sarah's Brother Franklin Gilman was a Wisconsin State Legislator.
Sarah and William and many of Sarah's Family were prominent
community leaders and pillars of their communities. There is
much published about Sarah's family of origin and William & Sarah Miner.
The New Ulm Minnesota Review published much about William and Sarah.
They featured a very memorable uplifting article about the double wedding
ceremony that Sarah and William hosted in their beautiful grove
near their home. On July 4, 1878 their Granddaughter Cora Farmer
married Fred Hopkins at their grove. ( Daughter of Lucinda Miner
Farmer Baldwin and the late Sanford Farmer) Their son William Miner Jr.
also married Mary Dungan the same day. The article sited the happy
gala attended by many. Lucinda became a young widow in 1873
when her Spouse Sanford Farmer passed away and she remarried to
Mr. Baldwin by the time Cora married. It appears that Sarah's Family survived
many hardships during their Pioneer days including disease as Tuberculosis.
Sarah's Granddaughter Cora Hopkins passed away from Tuberculosis in
1885. Cora left three young children. Sarah and William Miner helped
their daughter Lucinda raise Cora's three young children: Clarence Sanford
Farmer, Bessie Farmer and Adelpert Farmer. Sarah and William Miner were
wonderful loving Parents, Grandparents and Great Grandparents. They
taught their children and their grandchildren strong positive
family ethics & values, Faith, honesty, work ethic, life skills. Sarah, William
and many of their Family Members were very hard working, successful
Pioneers. Sarah and William were excellent role models
who made a positive difference in the world.
Sarah passed away just 5 yrs after her Granddaughter Cora and preceded
William in death. It is unknown how many in Sarah's family were
afflicted with T.B. but there were others who passed away
very young in their family. Lucinda and many other family left Brown Co.
Minnesota and moved to Washington state. Other Family relocated to
Wisconsin and other areas around the USA. Sarah's
Parents and many of her Family of origin lived in Wisconsin.
Sarah and William lived in Wisconsin abt 5 yrs during
their marriage prior to moving to Iowa. Sarah and William were early settlers,
Pioneers and farmers in many states. Many Family Members carried on the
tradition of being Farmers and Pioneers. Their were many generations
of Family who continued working in the farming industry.
Great Grandson Clarence Sanford Hopkins, his son Roy Hopkins
were farmers and had large farms in Polk Co. Wisconsin.
Sarah and William had many other Children, grandchildren who
continued working in the farming industry. Many of
Sarah's family of origin, her children, grandchildren, other family were
noted Pioneers, community leaders, respected pillars in their communities.

Sarah is survived by many relatives around the U.S. including Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Washington, North Dakota California, Vermont, New Hampshire,
Oregon, possibly Iowa and elsewhere around the USA.

There are many Historical
Biographies that site
Sarah's Family of Origin
and Sarah & William Miner.

The "Biographical History of
LaCross, Trempealeau and Buffalo
Counties of Wisconsin" first published
about 1892, volume one, pp 622-623
Sites much about Sarah's Family.
including: (paraphrased excerpts)
"The Gilman Family were
Early Settlers of the New England
Colonies. Several Brothers emigrated
from England, Settling in Maine and
New Hampshire initially. Sarah's
Father Samuel Gilman was born in
Maine. Sarah's Father Samuel married
her Mother Nancy Clark who was born
in New Hampshire. They moved to
different areas of Vermont. then to
different areas of Wisconsin
including Buffalo County Wisconsin. "
(paraphrased) "Prominent Mention"
and many nice things said and good
historical entries about Sarah's Family
of origin via Buffalo Co. Wisconsin.
(many more details in the
impressive biography available on
line, ebooks and hard copies)

To note:
The Brown County Minnesota
Biographies from 1882 " History
of the Minnesota Valley including
Explorers and Pioneers of Minnesota
Stark twp" sited William Miner.
The biography sited Sarah being married
to William. The biography sited William
and Sarah had "12 children born and 7 living".
Baby William born in 1845 who passed
away in 1845 may be one of those 12
children. Children's names not sited
in the biography. More details from
the paraphrased transcription included
in William's Memorial bio.

if the town was named after

Other references to the town
being named after Samuel
elsewhere. The information
unclear from the "Wisconsin
Blue Book of 1880" transcription.
The Gilman family came to Buffalo
Co. Wisconsin in 1854, the
Town Was named after Sarah's
Family. It refers to her brother
serving as the first chairman
of the Town Gilmanton Town Board.
(more about Franklin) It refers
to Franklin being elected in
1830, but he would have been only
5 yrs old. It appears both
Sarah's Father and Brother were
very active influential
Community Members.

Family of Origin had strong
Family ties in New Hampshire,
Maine and Vermont before moving
to Wisconsin. The Gilman's were
documented Pioneers and early

Sarah Gilman Married William Miner
in Burlington Co. Vermont Jan. 19, 1843

* * * * * * * * * *
