John Patrick Larkin was the son of Patrick and Anastasia Larkin. He had a brother Patrick Larkin.

John(23) and Catherine(17) were married on 1 Aug 1858 at St Mary's Church in Charlestown MA. Each was living in Charlestown when they married. Their marriage was witnessed by John's brother, Patrick, and Patrick's soon-to-be-wife, Catherine "Kate" Cavanaugh. Reverend George A Hamilton officiated.

John Patrick and Catherine Cavanaugh Larkin had 12 children:
Francis Patrick, Anastasia, Bennett Nicolas, John William, Thomas Edward, James Richard, Peter Stephen, Daniel Joseph, Lawrence, Mark Martin, Alice Winifred, and an adopted daughter, Florence. Sadly three more of their children, Lawrence, Mark Martin, and Alice Winifred died as young children.

John Patrick's obituary appeared on 14 Jun 1916:

"Mr. John P. Larkin, aged 84 years, died on Friday June 9, 1916 in Harwich, was born in Tipperary, Ireland, came to Cape Cod when a young man and lived the greater part of his life at the family homestead in Harwich Centre. He was married in 1858 to Katherine Kavanaugh of Charlestown, MA.

The deceased was the father of 9 sons and 3 daughters, of whom the widow and seven sons survive her. His sons: F.P. Larkin, wholesale fish dealer of Philadelphia, Penn., B.N. Larkin, merchant of Everett, J.W. Larkin, local real estate operator at Harwich, Thomas E Larkin, local plumber of Harwich, J.R. Larkin, lawyer of Boston, D. J. Larkin, clothier, Washington St., Boston.

The deceased was early identified with the fishing industry of the Cape as was well known a half century ago by the fishermen of the mackerel fleets to whom he supplied the barrels used in the trade.

The friends and relatives who were called to the home and funeral in addition to his sons and their wives, were: Richard E Larkin of Cambridge, James P Skehan of Canton, Mary E Cleary of Boston, J Edward Barry of Cambridge, Anthony P Larkin of Lakeville, Mrs Mary Wright of Dorchester, Wm Riley and family of Milton.

The deceased was devoted to his home and family, and was noted for his skill and industry as a master cooper before the introduction of machinery now commonly used.

This large and happy family has ever been one of close devotion to each other and the present bereavement is keenly felt. Especially is it severe upon the aged widow now in enfeebled health. Our sympathy goes out to them all.

The funeral services were held at the Catholic Church, Harwich Centre, Monday, June 12, where the deceased long had been a communicant, being one of the founders in the early sixties.

Six sons acted as pall bearers. Internment was in the Catholic Cemetery, Harwich"
