Peder Olsen Aune was born at the Ree estate farm in Stjørdal, the fourth of thirteen children born to Peder Clarisius Aune and Marie Petronella Struck.

At age 16, he apprenticed to the Polish photographer Carl Viktor Emanuel Huczowski who had fled his homeland and lived with Aune's family at Ree. Later Peder went to Sweden to study further. In 1883 he and his sister Karoline Margrethe established a camera shop and photography studio in Trondheim. About this time, he married to Anne Margrethe "Molla" Tønseth.

The following year, Peder and Anne moved to America, leaving his shop to his sister and father. They first lived in California, and about 1886 Peder started a photography business in Portland, Oregon. After Anne and their infant son died in 1895, he returned to Trondheim and left the Portland shop to his brother, Jonas Kristian Struck Aune.

Peder soon became one of the most prominent photographers in Europe and excelled in several exhibitions both domestically and abroad. He was also commissioned to photograph everything connected with the coronation of King Haakon VII (Prince Carl of Denmark) and Queen Maud (Maud of Wales) in 1906.

On 05 May 1900, he married to Aagot Dahl in Trondheim; they had no children. After his death in 1931, his widow ran the company until it ceased operation after about a year. She donated around 20,000 records and movies to the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences library, but most of the collection plates were unfortunately thrown into the sea.
