Peter Layton was the son of John (14) Layton & Anne (Runyon) Layton who lived in Long Hill, Morris, New Jersey. His father was the son of Samuel (6) Layton, son of William (1) Lawton/Layton of Monmouth, New Jersey. His mother was the daughter of Peter Runyon & Providence Blackford. His siblings were Providence (Justice John Carle), Violet Layton (John Runyon), Sarah (Bedient Baird), & Anne (Jonathan Caterline).

The "Old Cemetery" was located at North Ave. & Elm Street in Long Hill (what is now Stirling) and was established on property owned by Daniel Cooper (whose wife was Grace Runyon, sister of Peter's Mother, Anne Runyon Layton). Daniel established a burial ground on his property in Long Hill, Morris, New Jersey. And CPT. Peter Layton also owned most of the western part of what is today known as Stirling, bordering Mr. Daniel Cooper's land.

By 1975 the cemetery was in disarray and the stones were broken and fallen to the ground. The township removed the stones and will replace them with a Cenotaph at a later date. Capt. Peter Layton's stone, the one seen on this page, was one of those removed stones. My thanks to Kelly Roshto, Long Hill township historian, for sending me copies of the gravestones, that were formerly in Old Cemetery, and for additional articles regarding the cemetery and Capt. Peter Layton. Also thanks to Guy Roshto for providing the gravestone pictures.

Captain Peter Layton served in the Revolutionary War in the Morristown Militia commanded by Col. Sylvanus Seeley of Morristown from 1776-1778. He was the holder of Pew # 22 at Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church from 1769-1776; he was an Overseer of the Poor from 1764-1776. He also was a Surveyor of the Highways beginning in 1761 for Morristown; he was a Constable in 1787; he was the Commissioner of Appeal in Morristown; and was chosen Chairman of the Committee to establish the first Public Library in Morristown, Morris, New Jersey.*

Captain Peter Layton never married but his Will shows he left his estate to sisters Sarah & Anne, and nephew, Rev. John Carle.

*Information given in an article taken from what looks to be a Morristown Newspaper, Author Unknown; sent to me by a RAOGK Volunteer. My thanks to Marguerite Puca for helping me to know the location of the Old Cemetery.

This memorial established to honor Captain Peter Layton and also in hopes of finding other Layton family members. My 4th great grandfather was Thomas Layton born 11 May 1765 Morristown, Morris, New Jersey (as per his Revolutionary War Pension application) and I'm trying to find his parents.
There also was a Daniel Layton living in Morris Twp., Morris, New Jersey (1771 & 1776) shown in Substitute Census Records.
