Funeral services for Mr. John J. House will be Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at 3:00 P.M., at the First Baptist Church in Tallulah, La., with Bro. Bill Bearden and Bro. Jason McGuffie officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday at the church from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M.
Burial will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Lake Providence, La., under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.
Mr. House was born November 10, 1922 in Crenshaw, Ms., and died on May 17, 2015. He was 92 years old. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was very devoted to his family. Amy, a granddaughter, wrote-A gentle soul, but a giant personality, so quiet, yet so strong. My papaw was the strongest man I have ever known and he will always be my hero. When he told me stories from his years fighting in WWII to being a state trooper, I was in awe and would have given anything to have seen him in action. He would have given the shirt off of his back to help anyone in need and taught all of his grandchildren so many life lessons. I will always cherish the memories we made and will pass them on to his great grandchildren. He was a one of a kind man who loved all of his grandchildren with all of his heart and we loved him back just as much! What I wouldn't give to go riding on the levee telling stories again. Amanda, a granddaughter, wrote-He taught me about honor, respect, and hard work.
Mr. House entered the United States Marine Corps on April 18, 1942 and left on April 17, 1946. During this time he served in WWII and the Korean War. He shipped out in August of 1942 and saw action with the 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific, on the islands of New Caledonia, New Guinea, Peleliu, Cape Glouster, Okinawa, Post invasion at Guadel Canal. He also fought in the battle of the Chosin Reservoir, a member of the "Frozen Chosin". He said for three years he never saw any electric lights. He returned on August 6, 1945. In 1951 he joined the Louisiana State Police. He was on the State Pistol Team for nineteen years, a resident trooper of East and West Carroll Parishes, retired as Lieutenant, was Quick Draw 1st place seven years in a row, and was fair, honest, and polite. He retired from the State Police in 1973. Mr. House was also a member of the LA American Legion, Post #0037 in Lake Providence.
