Wayne Frederick Altena was born on May 17, 1937 to Sam and Grace (Heynen) Altena of Maurice. He was raised on the family farm west of Sioux Center, attending Sioux Center Christian School through the eighth grade. On Dec. 22, 1955 Wayne was united in marriage to Joanne Viola Nobel at her parent's home in Sioux Center. Following their marriage, Wayne and Joanne farmed southeast of Ireton. Wayne had been engaged in farming for 47 years. He milked his own Holstein cows for many years and also worked for Maassen's Dairy for eight years.
He was a member of Ireton Christian Reformed Church where he served on consistory as both elder and deacon. He also served on the Ireton Christian School board and as a board member of Unity Unit, a group in charge of fund raising projects for Christian education.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Joanne of Ireton; six children and their spouses: Randall Altena of Sunnyside, Wsh., Douglas Altena of Jenison, Mich., Pamela Klein of Sioux Center, Kenneth Altena of Grand Rapids, Mich, Michelle Vande Voort of Orange City, and Lynelle James of Lynden, Wash.; 22 grandchildren, four brothers Senard Altena, Wilmar Altena, Stanley Altena, Marlin "Mark" Altena all of Sioux Center; sister Julene "Julie" Kalsbeek of Spirit Lake and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Julene Shirley Altena
