Senard Altena, 75, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Monday night, 8/4, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Memorial services will be held Friday, 8/8, at 11:00 AM at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Carl Boersma officiating. Interment will be held prior to the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. Visitation will be held Thursday from 3pm to 8pm, with the family present from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center, Iowa.

The Altena Family requests memorials be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Senard Altena was born on August 25, 1927 to Sam and Grace (Heynen) Altena near Maurice, Iowa. Senard was raised on the family farm near Sioux Center, attending country school.

On June 20, 1947 he was united in marriage to Pearl Van Berkel at the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church. Senard and Pearl lived on a farm southwest of Sioux Center where Senard was engaged in farming until 1968. He then owned the Pioneer Seed business and the Siouxland Motel until moving to Arizona in 1981. There he operated a pest control business until retiring in 1998. Pearl preceded him in death on May 23, 1998.

Senard was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center and Grace Community Church in Mesa.

Senard married Nellie (De Vos) De Weerd in Sioux Center at Bethel Christian Reformed Church on January 2, 1999. They lived in Sioux Center except for the winter months which they enjoyed in Arizona.

Over the years Senard enjoyed the many fishing trips he took and was fond of visiting with family and friends. He had a passion for growing flowers in his yard and looked forward to helping his brother Mark with field work each season.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie (De Weerd) Altena of Sioux Center; one son and daughter-in-law and one daughter and son-in-law; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; along with five step-children and their spouses; fifteen step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Senard is also survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law; one sister and brother-in-law; one sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his first wife, Pearl, Senard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne Altena and a sister, Julene Shirley Altena.
